Guest Tucker Carlson says war is going ‘very bad’ for Ukraine despite counteroffensive

Ukraine’s rapid counteroffensive, which has reclaimed large swathes of land and forced Russia into a panicky retreat, could be a turning point in the war unfolding in Europe, US and Western officials say.

Volodymyr Zelensky announced late Monday that Ukrainian soldiers had liberated more than 6,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory — in just 12 days of September — in the eastern and southern parts of the country, where Russia had previously made the most progress.

The President of Ukraine asked for more weapons to fight back against Russia, saying: “Why is the biggest source of terror in the world – Russia – still able to fight this war? And why can she wage war so cruelly and cynically? There is only one reason – insufficient pressure on Russia.”

Officials in Washington said the swiftness with which Ukraine launched a counteroffensive and reclaimed its territory appeared to “stun Russian military units and commanders,” the report said. Washington Post said.

According to the British Ministry of Defense, part of the Russian army, which withdrew from Kharkov, suffered heavy losses.

The British Ministry of Defense announced today that some parts of the Russian army that left the Kharkiv region in the face of an intense Ukrainian counter-offensive suffered heavy losses.

He added that the army unit deployed by Moscow was also trained to carry out attacks against NATO in case of war.

“The units of the Russian forces withdrawn from the Kharkiv region over the past week were from the 1st Guards Tank Army (1st GTA), which is subordinate to the Western Military District (ZVO),” the ministry’s latest operational report says.

It added: “1 GTA suffered heavy casualties during the opening phase of the invasion and was not fully restored until after the Ukrainian counter-offensive in Kharkiv.”

The unit – 1 GTA – was “one of the most prestigious armies in Russia, dedicated to the defense of Moscow and designed to carry out counterattacks in the event of a war with NATO,” the British Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

“Because 1 GTA and other WEMD formations have been severely degraded, Russia’s conventional forces designed to counter NATO are seriously weakened. It will probably take years for Russia to restore this potential,” the ministry said.

US leaders avoid dance of victory in fighting in Ukraine

Leaders sitting in Washington closely watching the smoldering war in Ukraine are cautiously approaching significant domestic victories announced this week by officials in Kyiv, including Volodymyr Zelensky.

Military officials are now keeping a close eye on the looming fighting in the beleaguered country and are making plans to provide Ukraine with more weapons and train helpers. At the same time, they are anxiously waiting for Russia’s reaction to the rapid losses on the battlefield.

Philip Breedlove, a retired US Air Force general who was NATO commander in chief from 2013 to 2016, said: “I agree that the ball should not be thrown because Russia still has cards to play.”

“Ukraine is now clearly making lasting changes in the east and north, and I believe that if the West properly arm Ukraine, they will be able to keep their gains,” he added.

The end of the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis is not far off

The various crises that we faced a week ago have not gone away – quite significant events have taken place.

Ukrainian counterattacks in the east of the country caught everyone, not least the Russian occupiers, by surprise. The Russian troops, reportedly outnumbered eight to one, were overwhelmed and retreated so quickly that they left behind tanks and ammunition (as well as half-eaten meals – though if rumors about the quality of the Russian army’s rations are to be believed, this is more understandable).

While this is far from the case, a golden scenario is now emerging: the end of the war and the energy crisis.

Ukrainian military recaptured 6,000 square kilometers of land from Russia this month – Zelensky

Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the success of the counter-offensive launched by his troops late last night and said that in just 12 days of this month, his troops had seized more than 6,000 square kilometers of land.

“From the beginning of September to the present day, our soldiers have already liberated more than 6,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory – in the east and south. The movement of our troops continues,” Zelensky said in his overnight address.

He also confirmed Russia’s attack on civilian infrastructure in Kharkiv after his troops liberated the region’s town of Izyum over the weekend.

“On the one hand, this is a sign of desperation of those who invented this war. This is how they react to the defeat of Russian troops in the Kharkiv region. They can’t do anything to our heroes on the battlefield, and that’s why Russia directs its nefarious strikes against civilian infrastructure,” he said.

US sees Russian withdrawal from Kharkiv as turning point in war

The Ukrainian counterattack, which forced Russia into a panicked retreat and brought large swaths of occupied territory to Kyiv, could be a turning point in the war unfolding in Europe. Washington Post said today with reference to US and Western officials.

Officials in Washington said the speed with which Ukraine launched a counteroffensive and reclaimed its territory “stunned Russian military units and commanders.”

Calling it “definitely a military setback” for Russia, a US official warned, “I don’t know if I can call it a major strategic loss at this juncture.”

Officials monitoring the war in Europe said it was too early to say momentum had reversed in Kyiv’s favor.
