Actor Cameron Cowperthwaite chatted about American Horror Stories, working with Ryan Murphy and the digital age.
What is it like to be a part of American Horror Stories?
It’s a dream come true! I love and adore working with Ryan Murphy. He is an amazing producer/creator/writer/director and being a part of his TV show is a real pleasure! Also, fans are crazy about these things which are great to see and be a part of! Now that the episode is out and I can talk about it, I have to say that I’m very proud of how it turned out.
Crystal wrote an amazing script. Logan directed an amazing episode. The cast and crew were excellent. Madison and Spencer were great to work with. I’m so happy it’s being received so well.
What motivates you every day as an actor?
I think this business is about staying in constant motion. So I try to focus on listening and stay creative. Whether it’s editing a feature film I’m working on with a friend, writing a script, or reading plays or books; I just try to stay as focused as possible.
What is it like to be an actor in the digital age? (now that streaming and technology is so pervasive)
It’s fun! The good part is how much content there is to be a part of and watch! The difficult part is the new way of listening with self-recording/zooming and social media content. I don’t like it, but I understand its prevalence. Sometimes I miss mystery days because social media can drive me crazy.
I really love that streaming has allowed so many people to find their own creative voice and that a bunch of different projects have seen the light of day!
What are your plans for the future?
I just want to keep chugging along! I have a few shows planned this fall and next year that I can’t talk about but I’m so excited! I just can’t wait to see what the next creative endeavor will be!
What advice would you give to young and aspiring actors?
I think you just have to love it. Before I moved here, my father formulated an old rule that I still hold true to this day: if you don’t like it, find something else to do. And it is true. It’s too difficult.
It’s exhausting and brutal at times, and “fun” can be difficult if, for example, you really want a social life. But if you really love it and really find the process and the journey something that makes you light up, then this is for you! I’m just holding on to the belief that if you just don’t give up, you’ll make it.
What does the word success mean to you?
Success is an opportunity to do what you love. I always strive for big things. I think it’s just in my nature to be stubborn and ambitious and aim for the moon, but at the same time I understand that being an actor at a consistent level can be difficult. If you pay your bills by doing what you love, you are successful.
What would you like to tell our readers about American Horror Stories? (What do you want them to take away from it)
I just want the audience to have fun. I think if the twists scared you and the characters were people you got to know and the performances were engaging and you felt something, then the piece speaks for itself. After all, we are in the entertainment business and I want people to get out of their daily lives!
