Fendi kicked off New York Fashion Week with a show celebrating its flagship Baguette bag, making a solid comeback to the runway after the pandemic.

The Italian luxury house has gone all out 25 years after the small bag became a fashion staple when it was worn by actress Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City and 1990s supermodel Linda Evangelista closed the show on Friday, 15 years old. after she walked the runway for the last time.

Bag creator Silvia Venturini Fendi and Fendi Women’s Artistic Director Kim Jones collaborated with designer Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co., Sarah Jessica Parker herself, and Japanese handbag maker Porter.

The result is an entire collection centered around a compact rectangular wallet known for being worn under the shoulder like a baguette.

To techno music played in the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan, models demonstrated all sorts of baguette shapes.

There were bags, yes, as well as mini baguettes sewn onto baguettes or woven into the fabric of the clothes themselves—pockets, parkas, and sweaters; parachute skirts, cellophane opera capes and large fur hats are all recycled, says Fendi.

Silvers and fluorescent yellows have been used throughout, paying homage to the glass facades of New York skyscrapers and the life jackets worn by the ubiquitous city workers.

Meanwhile, Evangelista’s triumphant comeback comes a year after she announced she was retiring from the limelight after botched cosmetic procedures.

She was not the only star: Sarah Jessica Parker, of course, was also present; as did South Korean actor and model Lee Min Ho, who was greeted by a cheering crowd as he stepped onto 34th Street.

Covid-19 has caused Fashion Week 2020 to be virtually wiped out, with live shows back in 2021, but without many of the designers.

However, in 2022 it will return to its frantic pace, with 101 shows on the official calendar until Wednesday, followed by three more major shows in London, Paris and Milan.

“A live show is something that cannot be replaced,” Steven Kolb, chief executive of the Fashion Alliance of America (CFDA), told AFP.

New York-based brand Proenza Schouler also held its Friday show in the monumental hall of one of the city’s first Beaux-Arts buildings in Manhattan’s financial district.

American brand Tommy Hilfiger is also among the big names to be featured in New York this season.

But it’s especially gratifying for the CFDA to see European houses like Fendi, Marni of Italy and COS, all part of the Swedish H&M group.

“It really boosts New York’s international reputation,” says Kolb, who also sees it as a recognition of the size of the US market.

Even before the pandemic, New York had to deal with large deserters like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein who wanted a change of pace or went to show their collections elsewhere.

And this season, the American market still has to do without a great talent like Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder of Pyer Moss.
