September 19 (Reuters) – German buyers of Russian natural gas have resumed issuing bids for supplies via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline for the first time since a key gas pipeline was shut down for maintenance about three weeks ago, according to data from German gas pipelines.

Russia halted gas flows through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which runs under the Baltic Sea to Germany, on August 31 for a three-day repair.

The shutdown exacerbated Europe’s worst gas supply crisis, with energy prices soaring and German importers even discussing possible rationing in the European Union’s largest economy.

Moscow has accused the sanctions imposed by the West after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine of hindering the routine operations and maintenance of Nord Stream 1. Brussels says it’s a pretext, and Russia is using the gas as an economic weapon in retaliation.

Nord Stream 1 is by far the largest Russian gas pipeline to Europe, carrying up to 59.2 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

The bids are requests for the supply of gas, not indications that gas is actually flowing through the system.

Earlier this month Gazprom (GASP.MM) Deputy CEO Vitaly Markelov told Reuters that Nord Stream 1 will not resume pumping until Siemens Energy (ENR1n.DE) repair of faulty equipment. Siemens Energy said they could not understand the information provided by Gazprom.

“Our assessment is that the conclusion communicated to us is not a technical reason to stop work. Such leaks usually do not affect the operation of the turbine and can be repaired on site, ”the department added.

European gas prices have more than doubled since the beginning of the year on the back of reduced supplies from Russia.

President Vladimir Putin on Friday denied that Russia had anything to do with Europe’s energy crisis, saying that if the European Union wants more gas, it should lift sanctions preventing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from opening. read more

Nord Stream 2, which runs almost parallel to Nord Stream 1, was built a year ago, but Germany decided not to proceed just days before Russia moved troops into Ukraine on February 24.

Buyers nominated for 3,652,554 kilowatt-hours (kWh/h) of Nord Stream 1 gas from 08:00 to 09:00 CET on September 19 to be delivered to the OPAL gas pipeline in eastern Germany, according to data on the OPAL gas pipeline website . .

NEL gas pipeline buyers offered 14,291,845 kWh of gas over the same period, according to NEL.

Nord Stream did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
