Hurricane Key threatens Baja California coast; Hurricane Earl forming in the Atlantic

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane K made heavy rainfall on Mexico’s Pacific coast Tuesday as it moved northward toward the Baja California peninsula. Kei’s maximum sustained winds rose to 85 mph (140 km/h) and forecasters said a hurricane could hit the peninsula this week.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Earl formed in the Atlantic and threatened to skirt Bermuda with tropical storm winds, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The Hurricane Center said Wednesday that Cay is about 215 miles southwest of the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. At 9 am, the maximum sustained wind reached 105 m/s, some increase is expected today.

Kay was moving northwest at 13 miles per hour (20 km/h). A storm warning has been issued for the southern part of the peninsula.

Forecasters expected Cay to remain offshore as it moves north, roughly parallel to the coast, as it continues to strengthen.

Kay could get close to landing later in the week in a relatively deserted area around Isla de Cedros.

In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Earl intensified to hurricane strength northeast of Puerto Rico after heavy rainfall in the Leeward Islands, the United States, the British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Earl was about 345 miles (555 km) north of St. Thomas on Monday and was moving north at 7 miles per hour (11 km/h).

Earl had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 km/h) and was expected to develop into a major hurricane later this week as it turns towards the open Atlantic.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Daniel weakened far across the Atlantic, about 835 miles (1,345 km) west-northwest of the Azores.

The maximum wind speed reached 75 miles per hour (120 km/h).
