Jerusalem, Sep 8 (Reuters) – Israel’s largest supermarket chain Shufersal (SAE.TA) said on Thursday it opened the country’s first offline store, where shoppers don’t have to queue at the checkout or scan any items, and payments and receipts are made digitally.

So-called hassle-free shopping is gaining traction around the world as food giants seek to cut costs on tight margins and fine-tune inventory and supply chain management to make shopping more convenient for customers.

The technology in Shufersala’s store is developed by Israeli startup Trigo, which also developed the technology at British retailer Tesco’s High Holborn subsidiary in London.

Trigo also works with Germany’s REWE, Aldi NORD, Netto and Wakefern Food Corp. in the US, the company said in a joint statement with Shufersal.

Trigo is using AI-powered computer vision and off-the-shelf hardware to transform existing supermarkets into fully offline and digital stores. It uses algorithms for ceiling-mounted cameras that automatically learn and upload customer movements and product selections.

Amazon (AMZNO.O)French Carrefour (CARR.PA)Dutch grocery retailer SPAR and 7-Eleven are also moving to such technologies.
