The death of Queen Elizabeth II evoked sympathy from leaders around the world, including the leaders of Russia and Ukraine.
Presidents of Russia and Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky expressed their condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday at the age of 96. Newsweek.
The Queen’s death actually marks a pause in Russia’s increasingly bellicose stance towards Britain due to its vocal support for Ukraine.
Zelensky expressed “deep sorrow” in connection with the death of Elizabeth in tweet.
President Putin issued statement addressed King Charles III, saying:
“Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
The most important events in the recent history of the United Kingdom are inextricably linked with the name of Her Majesty. For many decades, Elizabeth II rightfully enjoyed the love and respect of her subjects, as well as authority on the world stage.
I wish you courage and resilience in the face of this heavy, irreparable loss. I ask you to convey the words of sincere sympathy and support to the members of the royal family and all the people of Great Britain.
The message comes despite the fact that the British royal family expressed support for Ukraine, which Russia invaded in February. Putin is also deeply unpopular in the United Kingdom: YouGov poll found that 88% of the British have a negative attitude towards the Russian president.
The Queen hosted Putin and his wife at Buckingham Palace in 2003.
At one of her last meetings with the head of state, Queen Elizabeth appeared for photographs with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in front of a bouquet blue-yellow flowersnational colors of Ukraine.
It also became known that President Putin will not attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday. Politico.
Peskov said that while Russians “respect” the queen “for her wisdom,” Putin’s presence at the funeral was not an option. The spokesman added that a decision would be made in the near future on who would represent Russia at the ceremony.
